This is going to seem so freaking simple; you’re not going to believe it. But it’s true and I’m going to show you how it’s done.
And for the record, I’ve seen it happen not only by some well-chosen mentors and colleagues, but myself too.
I could write this post with just two words: Keep Writing.
But that wouldn’t be very fair. So I’m going to give you my personal method.
Study great advertising.
I define “great advertising” as sales copy that sells stuff. Think of your sales copy as a good sales person who makes a lot of sales.
Advertising is just salesmanship in print (or whatever medium is appropriate).
Once you get that in your head, then it’s much easier to write big paycheck.
Model great advertising.
This is where a swipe file can help out. A swipe file is simply a collection of sales messages that have been proven to produce sales. I’ll share a great place to start building your swipe file.
Now, keep in mind, a swipe file should be used to stimulate ideas for your own adverting. Never ever copy these ads – just use them to jump start your own ad copy.
When I began my ad writing journey, I would copy out these killer sales letters by hand. This helped me get a feel for writing great ad copy, because I was writing great copy.
By writing out these ads, it was like a neurological imprint on my brain. Sounds crazy but it worked. I strongly suggest you try it.
Write, write, write. . .
. . . as often as you can. Preferably each day. Yeah, this sounds silly but the more you do something, the better you get.
So, get your pen in gear and write. If you don’t know what to write about simply start a journal and write about the events of the day. No one has to see this but you. And you’ll get in the habit of pay attention and thinking about stuff you did during the day.
Free Swipe File
I talked about starting a swipe file earlier in this article. Here’s a super place to start building your own swipe file: Visit https://swiped.co/ . I’ve used this site for years to generate ideas for ad copy.
Another place is your mail box. Yes, your “junk mail” can be a treasure trove of inspiration. So start saving those mail pieces that keep showing up over and over. They’re pure gold.
Lastly, I suggest you consider taking a few courses on copywriting. This will cost you some bucks, but shortens the learning curve by years. I recommend anything by John Carlton, particularly his (note this affiliate link) Simple Writing System.
Of course if you are really serious, consider finding a mentor. The A-listers, like Carton don’t come cheap but they are best of the best. And consider yourself lucky to on their dance card these days.
But fortunately if you dig around, you can still find great mentors (who were trained by top-gun writer) who are very good. Either way, be prepared to shell out some big money.
